All Fans is Invited to Join as the Extra Haim Member.

"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The author likewise wants to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. A host of celebrated supporters have openly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the best groups, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently depict them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"Therefore everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The group have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed confidence demanded a new sound – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
